Find help paying your rent

By PittsburghMomma - on Jan 16, 2011
Posted in PittsburghMomma

You can find help with paying your rent from assistance programs offered by your state, the federal government, or other independent organization and charities. Or if you are being evicted because your landlord is facing foreclosure, read about your tenant - landlord foreclosure rights.

State Assistance Programs and Organizations

  • Many states and local governments have government run organizations and agencies that can help you with paying your rent, security deposit, and other housing expenses. For example Massachusetts offers RAFT, the TDHCA rent assistance program in Texas, the Florida EFAHP program, Connecticut RAP, and many others. Contact the Assistance Agencies and Programs in your state to find rent help, or your local community action agency for rent help.

Short Term Loans

  • Salary Advance Loans, Payday Loans, and Peer to Peer Lending:
Salary Advance Loans are a relatively new low interest loan product offered by credit unions to help those in need quickly get cash, and they can be used to help with rent. Peer to Peer lending involves receiving loans from social networks at lower interest rates than banks and payday loans. Payday loans are another option to help pay rent, but they will have a higher interest rate than the previous two options.  More.

Charities and Other Local Resources

  • You need to look to your local community and charities:
If you are experiencing a difficult time in paying your rent for a month, you should contact community and local agencies that may be able to help you with paying rent and security deposits. There are many community, religious, and charitable organizations that will sometimes have funds that can help many types of people who are having financial difficulties. Some of the organizations on the list, such as the Salvation Army and United Way can assist with rent. See the following link of organizations that can help. There are also charities and organizations referenced that can help with utility and heating bills.  Resources provided are often one-time-only or they are given on a first-come-first-served basis, so you should not depend on these sources over the long term. Calling these organizations, even if you are affiliated with their group or a member, can sometimes get you the help you need. Or they can many times refer you to an agency that can help with paying rent and bills if your need is great. Some examples of agencies that can help include Catholic Charities, Social Services, United Way, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, and Legal Aid Society. There are many others.

  • Churches provide rent assistance:
Many local churches are increasing their assistance programs, including offering more rent help, electric bill aid, and more.

  • Check your eligibility for government resources:
If a member of your household, or you personally, are a veteran you may very well qualify for government assistance that can help with paying your rent, bills, or debts. You need to contact your local veterans association for more eligibility requirements and more details on these rent assistance programs for veterans.

  • Communicate:
Contact your creditors, as well as your landlord, and communicate with them and tell them exactly what is going on. You need to be very honest about every part of your financial picture. You can ask for a lower temporary rent payment, or even ask for a skipped payment schedule. The landlord and creditors will appreciate you being proactive, and in many cases they would rather keep you as a tenant than have to evict you, as it can cost them thousands of dollars to go through the eviction process, market the site, find a new tenant, run background checks on the new tenant, etc. It is many times in their best interest to work with you.

  • Reduce expenses:
You need to immediately reduce your expenses. Cancel everything that you can - cell phones, cable TV, processed foods, etc. Eat as cheaply as you can like mac & cheese, use powered milk, etc. As every dollar in lower expenses can help with paying your bills and rent.

  •  Contact your utility company:
You need to ask them what kind of payment plans they have for people in need or experiencing financial hardship. You may have to show them a lot of documentation of your condition, but it will be worth it if you can save on or skip a couple electric bills. You need to free up money by saving on utility bills.

Hello Pica

Hi Lisa,

I would try this for help with medicine

http://www.friendsofman.org/

What Friends of Man Does

Friends of Man provides the needy with the following; Food, Clothing, Medicine, Prostheses, Wheelchairs, Eyeglasses, Dentures, Medical Equipment, Daycare, Training and Education, Hearing Aids, and More!

http://www.pparx.org/

See if you are able to get help with pparx above with the medical costs .

Then see if you can get help from modestneeds.org to see if it will help you with rent and you can apply on line. There are other possiblities with help from rent here. It is hard to find help for rent as I have tried two years ago in CA but funds weren't there and still not there which doesn't help anyone. Try these and let's hope for the best

http://help-with-rent-security-deposit-utility-bills.starshine1.aidpage.com/

Good luck

You need to think of buying gold and silver bullions with your money.  There are homes that are for sale for less than 1 months rent in Detroit due to forclosure.  Since you are making rock bottom wages anyway, you may as well as go to Detroit and work part time for minimum wage knowing that at least you are now only having to pay for utilities and food.  Sure life will not be hunky dory, but you will have equity.  When the economy turns around, you will be able to sell it for a profit.  (And even if you don't, for a dollar a roof over your head is a bargain.)

Hi Mindi

I know a lot of what you are experiencing. Recently my boyfriend lost his job and I am too a full time college student with 2 small children. I was forced to take on a part time job in addition to kids and school which is exausting. Anyways my big suggestion is to check with your local state office about getting on food stamps and cash assistance. They usually help. This will help get you through till maybe something on here can come through. Another thing is if you are not on the WIC program and your children are under 5 you should qualify check it out also at your local state office(or at least they will know where to tell you to go) anyways best of luck to you! Hopefully we both find what we are looking for.

in response to miss_hopeful...   It is one thing for someone to say that they understand, but totally another thing when it is you that is suffering and in need of immediate financial assistance. I continuously get respnses such as, have you tried this solution, have you asked this organization.  When you need help now, there is limited time to fill out paperwork and submit and then wait.  Try living off of $872 per month, due to a disability, and out of that comes rent, medicaton, transportation cost, food, and utilities.  No one is listening nor paying attention, where do you go and what do you do.  That's my story, what's your answer? brasssas

Hi

I am a mother of 6 daughters. My divorce was finalized in 2004. It was 2 years long. I have custody of all of my children. I live with my 2 youngest daughters father but combined income doesn't pay for all the bills. I am looking for some assistance in paying rent this month and next month. I am already 1 day late on my rent which is 1575 so now I have to pay 1625. I have aleady tried with the city welfare although we do qualify my landlord doesn't accept it. I am asking for some help as I do not want to have to be put out on the street for the winter time the shelters hear are maxed out. I can't move into a cheaper place becasue noby wants to take six children they rather just take the adults and one child and the dog.  Any one knows what to do please let  me know thanks.

I understand your situation bit you may want to swallow your pride and apply for public assistance as it you financially qualify.  I don't know, but it seems worth a shot.  Depending on what state you live you may qualify for the ESA (emergency shelter allowance).  This is a one time allowance in which the Welfare Office issues a check to your landlord provided you show ability to pay future rent (you are currently working).

I personally considered applying for a personal grant.  I think it is for $2500.  It sure worth trying. Good luck to you.

Hi

I lost my retired husband age 52 in 2006 due to a heartattack and he also had cancer, He was a big drinker everyday and night. He was not living at the home for the last years of his life and was supposed to be paying the bills. I was a stay at home mom so I had no income, about 3 months before he passed away he told me he did a chapter 13 and in 3 more months it would be out of the stay period, he had included the home in this and sign his part of the mortgage away but my name still remained but he had not paid on the Mortgage payments for 7 months before he did the chapter 13 unknown to me. When he passed away I went through papers he had and found the lawyer he used for the chapter 13 and I called her and asked how could he do this without me signing anything (the chapter13) I was told he didnt need to because he was signing away his responsibility to the Mortgage, I ask her when the stay was up and I was told any day. I right away called the Mortgage lender and talked this out with them the papers for foreclosure was on their desk ready to go to their lawyer but had not yet and I ask if I could pay the arrearage and was told yes, so I use the small insurance check I got from what he had from he had work, I was so glad I had that check to pay for that and at least i would not lose my home.

I soon found out He also was having the water bill tagged to the property taxes which was years 2004-2006. I had no idea of any of this until he passed away, I managed to pay 2004 and now IM trying to pay 2005 and its not looking good it 1,400 and I have until March 31st 2008 I only get half of what he was getting from his retirement 1,60.00 The County can't help me (DHS) because they said they have to pay all back property taxes due they cant just pay 1 year and it goes over the amount they allow of 2,000.

IM trying hard to pay everything my Mortgage with is only 289.00 a month but its very hard to do everything on small amount I get seeing I have other bills also and have to eat I can only get 29.00 a month in food help from the county, and no cash help. I also was left with a home that is really bad holes all over in walls from being punched by him and big windows with air leaks in all windows, no proper flooring its all come up broken cupboards that look embarrassing and its just the whole house it looks so bad IM embarrassed to have any1 over. The basement is full of stuff if something wasn't any good he would throw it down there and thru the years its just pack with junk that's no good. I cant even buy clothes or other things I need, its really bad

I cant need any credit at all because he wasn't paying anything and when I was paying for my credit that was in my name I no longer that the funds when he left the home, I was getting no money from him only a few here and there to get some food but not enough of that to get thru the month. No one will touch me and all I want is a chance to either get a loan so I can fix the house up just enough to have it look nice, and pay off bills such as property taxes and catch Mortgage up 3 months worth. I know this sounds unreal but I can supply pictures of rooms throughout my home as embarrassing as it is, but I have to do something Im so depressed and dont want to do anything far as going places, just so unhappy and losing my husband also even though we was not living together and all he did I still feel bad today because he died and im just lost to all, and don't know what to do im scared I might lose my home if things don't get better, even though its not much its all I have.

Does anyone have any help or idea how I can do this? I need help fast and I just can't seen to find any.

I don't have an answer for you but I do have a comment. I am a little upset about the help that there is available. I can't believe that there is nothing out there to help. I am in the same situation. I owe over $4000 in rent because of a mistak that my apartment complex made. It's subsidized housing and they lost a paper of mine that said no one in my house was no longer working so they are charging me rent based on 30% of earned income when there was none. I am wondering how we(the government) can pay for so many things such as trail groomers for snowmobiles, federal cllege aid for students that only stay in college long enough to get the checks and to keep people off the streets in other countries when we can't seem to help those right here in our own country. I might be ok if I could get the child support that is owed to me but I guess we don't need to support our children during the divorce becausde I don't get anything until the divirce papers are signed. So if he never signs the papers, I don't get support. I can tell you this....WHEN I get out of this mess, I am going to do something, if I have to do it alone to get people to understand that we need alot more things than nicely groomed trails for our snowmobilers or frat parties for college students. My email is pogey_girl@yahoo.com if you would like to send me a comment about this. Good luck to you and I hope you don't lose your house.

There is a huge uphill battle ahead , but things do have to change somehow. ANOTHER PROGRAM ABOUT THE DISABLED AND HOUSING CHALLENGES

If our government  would provide more  in the way of finances for the disabled ,we wouldn't need this site. Since we do need the site , here it is :

OPENING DOORS - A HOUSING INITUATIVE FOR THE DISABILITY COMMUNITY

______________________________________________

Here are possible places you can look if you need help to pay for needed home modifications:

If the work is prescribed by your doctor you may be able to claim a Medical deduction on your Form 1040 income tax return.

Get contributions/donations/in-kind work from others (family members, Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, other private foundations or community service groups, churches, sorority/fraternity service organizations or craftsmen's unions).

Under the Technology Related Assistance to Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988 (Tech Act), many states have programs that offer assistance on evaluating equipment and locating funds.

Ask your local Center for Independent Living for information on funding and resources that support "independent living in the community".

Funds may be available for home modifications under a Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services Waiver in your state. Contact your county welfare office for Medicaid eligibility.

Call your local Social Security office to see if any of the equipment you need might be covered under Medicare.

If you or your spouse is a veteran, call your local VA to see if funding is available.

Contact your local public housing authority (Office of Community Services, Supportive Services, Section 8, etc.). Ask, "Is there low income assistance available for housing modifications for people with disabilities?"

Looking For  LOW INCOME Housing

If you are looking for affordable/low income housing , this organization has an idea that  I have not heard of before. It is a good idea , though . Here is their suggestion.

"I am looking for housing that is affordable. Who can help me? As a policy advocacy organization, NLIHC is not able to provide direct assistance to people looking for affordable housing.  However, there are places you can look for help.

Every member of Congress has a staff member whose job it is to assist the people they represent, that is, their constituents with issues such as the ones you are facing. This person should know the local community and how you can best go about finding the services you need.

To find your member of Congress, enter your ZIP code in the "Contact Congress" box below, or on NLIHC's home page. You will see a picture of your Representative, and under his or her picture will be a link that says info.  Click that link to get the phone number of the main district office.  Another link will give you the numbers of additional district offices; call the one that is nearest to you.   Ask for the person who handles constituent services. Explain your situation, and ask for suggestions on how to best access affordable housing in your district.  The constituent caseworker should be able to point you in the right direction or suggest resources in your area. "

Here is the site of the NLIHC , which stands for National Low Income Housing Coalition :

Another search for affordable housing , by state housing authority links .

A housing authority generally has two types of assistance available: Section 8 vouchers and affordable apartments.  This is not a complete listing of all that is available in each state , but it is a place to start in your search.

Financial Assistance

By mindi_jo - on Sep 18, 2005
Posted in mindi_jo

Hi.  My name is Mindi.  My husband and I have run into some unforseen problems lately.  He lost his job and his current job only pays 250 a week.  My husband is the sole provider for our family of five.  I currently returned to college and am unable to work because I have three small children to look after.  If anyone can help us with the bills we have fallen behind on, or if anyone knows how to find some financial assistance, we both would be greatly indebted.  We want to teach our children the importance of education by setting good examples for our children.

I NEED HELP TO PAY OFF MY DEBTORS AND TO BUY A NEW CAR

By nikki1 - on Sep 2, 2005
Posted in nikki1

I am a single mother of two boys-ages 3 and 4.  I am currently working as a cena in a nursing home.  My wages do not allow me to pay my rent of $585, and keep the lights on too.  My fiance lost his job do to shortage of work, and we are behind in our rent.  Since we have been such good renters for two years, our landlord has been patient with us up until this point.  We just got custody of my fiance's 10 year old daughter in January of this year because her mother is a meth addict.  We have no where to go if we are evicted, and we are so ashamed and disgusted that we cannot even provide for our own children.  I want to go to school to become an LPN but cannot afford to go part-time at work to attend classes.  My fiance has been looking for work every day that I don't work, but it seems that there is nobody hiring for a certified diesel mechanic.  And just today the brakes went out on our car.  We work so hard, and it seems like as soon as we take one step forward, we fall two steps back.  If we had some financial help to pay off some of our past debts, and catch up on rent and other bills, it could buy us some time until my fiance can find a job.  I can't do it all by myself.  Where is the help out there?
